LGBTQ+ rights in France - DYKKA.com

France is a country of world-famous cuisine, art, and rich history. It's no wonder it receives the most tourists in the world each year. But what's life like for LGBTQ+ people there?

France is very progressive compared to many countries, at least when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. The last execution for same-sex sexual intercourse took place in 1750, and the law was repealed 41 years later, during the French Revolution. During World War II, Germany occupied part of France, and same-sex sex was again criminalized in that territory, but after the war the law disappeared from the law again.

In 1999, the country allowed couples to enter into registered partnerships , not just those of the same official gender. Marriage for all was legal in France in 2013, but discrimination on the basis of transgender identity was banned three years later. Official gender reassignment without the need for hormone treatment or surgery came into effect in 2017.

Paris, the capital of France, is considered the city of lovers, not only cisgender and heterosexual. It is also a city of art: those interested in paintings can visit the Louvre Museum, those interested in music will probably follow in the footsteps of Josephine Baker and other famous people from all over the world who have come to live and create here.

It is also a city with a vibrant LGBTQ+ life. After all, singer Josephine Baker was bisexual, as was actress and editor Colette (nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature). Other notable LGBTQ+ figures in Paris include Irish writer Oscar Wilde and writer Marguerite Yourcenar , the first member of the French Academy.

So if you want to get to know the country of delicious cheeses and impressionist paintings and enjoy queer culture at the same time, head towards France...
