LGBTQ+ rights in the Netherlands - DYKKA.com

The Netherlands is the first country in the world to introduce marriage for everyone. And with the same rights and obligations. Btw, back in 2001...

This country, famous for its cheese, clogs and liberal attitude towards cannabis, has not always been an oasis for LGBTQ+ people. In relatively recent times, we can mention World War II, when sex between people of the official sex was illegal. However, after the defeat of Germany, it was abolished.

The so-called Homomonument , a large triangle with three smaller, pink triangles at its corners, commemorates this sad period. It was built in 1987 in memory of executed gays and lesbians.

Not far from the Homomonument is the museum of the bisexual writer Anne Frank , who also died during World War II. Although she was originally from Germany, her family secretly moved to the Netherlands during the war. She kept a diary while living in a cramped apartment from which no one could climb out, so as not to give themselves away. However, the family was betrayed and taken to concentration camps, from which only Anne's father Otto Frank returned home. And because Anne wanted to become a writer, Otto Frank decided to fulfill her dream, at least posthumously.

However, there have been – and still are – many LGBTQ+ personalities in the Netherlands. Among them, let's mention transgender top model Loiza Lamers , who even became the marshal of the Prague Pride parade in 2018.

The Netherlands also largely recognizes the rights of intersex people . It has been possible to have an indeterminate official gender at birth since 1993. Since 2021, it has also been possible in the Netherlands to have an indeterminate official gender registered if we are non-binary.
