Are you looking for a movie tip, but are you fed up with all the hetero- or ciscentric films? Or are you simply interested in LGBTQ+ heroines? Here are my picks for movies that are definitely worth seeing. And we're starting in 1931! Sure, there are a lot of shiny new movies and smut on Netflix, but I recommend paying attention to older works as well. You'll see how relevant they are.
Girls in Uniform (1931, Germany)
This German film, over ninety years old, was one of the first to bring the theme of romantic love between women to the silver screen, even though it was based on the play Yesterday and Today by Christy Winsloe. The film is about young Manuela, who, after being orphaned, has to move to a boarding school. Here, she is cared for by, among others, the helpful and kind governess Elisabeth, with whom Manuela falls in love. Director: Leontine Sagan.
Fire (1996, India)
The title of the film translates to "fire" and that's exactly what ignites the hearts of Sita and Radha, two relatives whose husbands don't pay much attention to their wives and who eventually fall in love with each other. However, their love is not welcomed by society, and certainly not by their husbands. Unfortunately, it ends up in a fire... Directed by: Deepa Mehta.
All About My Mother (1999, Spain)
In this film, we embark on the journey of Manuela, a woman whose son dies, whose last and unfulfilled wish was to meet his father. However, his biological father is actually a woman named Lola. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar.
Yossi & Jagger (2002, Israel)
Lieutenant Josi and Lieutenant Lior, nicknamed Jagger, are called to the Israeli-Lebanese border and begin a romantic relationship that they keep secret from others. A certain complication is the fact that soldier Goldie has also fallen in love with Jagger. The story is full of not only love, but also pain and coping with invisibility. Director: Eytan Fox.
The Runaways (2010, USA)
This film tells the story of a real-life 1970s girl rock band of the same name, based on the autobiography of lead singer Cherie Currie. After a trio of young musicians get together, the band gets a record deal and quickly becomes famous, which the girls find difficult to cope with. Directed by Floria Sigismondi.
